6 Ways To Kid-Proof Your Home

Originally posted on 04/07/2023 @ 22:37

Children might have a penchant for mischievous behaviour. No matter how many times you tell them to stay away from certain objects or places, they will not listen until harm ensues. Experience is, after all, the teacher of all things. However, being mischievous is never a problem. The issue arises when your children unintentionally injure themselves. To avoid that from happening, here are the 6 ways to transform your home into a safe haven:

1. Keep Cleaning Supplies Out of Reach

It is not surprising that many children have been brought to the emergency room as a result of chemical poisoning. The only way to avoid this is to store your cleaning supplies out of their little grasp. You can do so by using locks to secure the cabinets.

Alternatively, you can resort to a more traditional method by placing them up high where their hands cannot reach. Be sure to also read the recommended storage instructions on the label. Also, you do not want to place them near the microwave or sunlight! Chances are, you would do more damage than good.

2. Avoid Cords on Window Shutters and Drapes

Children are drawn to moving objects, and cords are known to dangle, which is a huge no to children’s safety. However, if you own one, maybe it is about time to change. As the industry evolves and child safety becomes more critical, people are starting to manufacture cutting-edge blind technology that provides cordless blinds.

These blinds are powered by a spring system that only requires a gentle tug. It is simple, concise, and, most importantly, safe. But if blinds are not up to your alley, and you can choose curtains. Instead, employ those that are motorized by a controller, and make sure the fabrics are either Oekotex 100 Certified or Greenguard Certified that are human and environment friendly.

3. Secure Electrical Sockets and Cords

Plug sockets and cords are among the most important areas to babyproof. However, it is often overlooked, especially by first-timers. After all, so many of our daily necessities require constant plug-ins. To avoid your little ones sticking their fingers into the socket, try incorporating the use of outlet boxes.

An outlet box completely conceals the electrical socket and even accommodates long cords. It is especially ideal for larger appliances permanently plugged in, such as air purifiers, washing machines, televisions, and refrigerators. Just be on the lookout for a two-button release system, as it will make it almost impossible for your child to open.

4. Use Gates Around Stairs

Have you ever been scared at the prospect of your child teetering on the edge of a staircase? Any stairwells in your home, no matter how small or steep, must be babyproofed. When it comes to this, one thing is certain: it is either you cover both- the top and bottom of the stairs or none. This is because one cannot simply function without the other.

Always read the instructions properly when putting up a baby gate because a shaky and unstable gate can increase the risk of them falling. Also, do not use accordion gates no matter how aesthetically pleasing you want your house to look, as it can trap their head and cut off their air supply. Your child’s safety should always be your number one concern.

5. Secure Your Windows

Windows, like fires, can be fatal. Falling is perhaps the most common home accident for children. Children are not adults and are not yet aware of the dangers that life poses to us all. An adult who falls from a two-story window only sustain a broken leg. However, the same cannot be said for children.

The most effective way to childproof your home is to secure all the windows. To do so, make certain that windows cannot be opened far enough for a child to crawl through. If possible, incorporate the type of windows that only open from the top. However, if you use key-operated window locks, keep the key out of their reach and also with you at all times, in case of emergency.

6. Watch Out for Sharp Corners

You never realize the danger your child could potentially be in at the comfort of your very home until you become a parent yourself. Then suddenly, you start to envision them hitting their toes at the wall corner or any other situation. Oh, all the endless possibilities!

If you plan to purchase a corner guard, make sure it is made from silicone rubber. This material is extremely durable and will not cause any damage if your little ones try chewing on them at the peak of theirteething. But if you want something visually appealing, opt for a rubbery transparent protector that blends in well with your furniture.

Remember, no matter how bright or mischievous your child is, you must always stay ahead of them by following all the tips above. Exercising utmost caution is never a bad thing, especially when it could potentially save their life.
